Expert suggests real reason for West Ham blocking Issa Diop transfer as big-money bid rejected
Noel Whelan has suggested West Ham could stall the exit of Issa Diop until the end of the transfer window after an injury to Nayef Aguerd.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed “it makes sense” to keep the 25-year-old for the opening games of the season unless David Moyes is “absolutely adamant” that he has no place at the club.
According to French outlet Foot Mercato (25 July), West Ham have rebuffed a €17.5million (£14.8million) bid from Fulham for Diop.
The report claims Moyes’ side are holding out for an improved offer of €21million (£17.8million) in order to part with the centre-back.
Meanwhile, the club have confirmed (25 July) that £29.6million summer arrival Aguerd has undergone successful surgery on an ankle injury sustained in pre-season.
Whelan suggested West Ham may have a “plan B” to replace the Moroccan if their valuation of Diop is met.
“I think it probably makes sense to put this move off until the end of the window,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“Unless they’re absolutely adamant that they don’t want him at the club, and they feel they can get a replacement in quickly.
“If they are then they could take the money and invest it as quickly as possible in someone who can fill the gap long-term.
“It’s difficult. They’re not in a good position now with the injury to Aguerd – someone who they have forked out big money for.
“At the same time, if Diop isn’t what Moyes wants – they’ve got to have a plan B.”

West Ham start their Premier League campaign against Man City on 7 August.
The transfer window slams shut on 1 September.
