Expert: Tottenham could sign Maxwel Cornet and make £10m profit after update

Tottenham could replace Steven Bergwijn with Maxwel Cornet and make a £10million profit.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

On 24 May, The Mirror reported Antonio Conte is interested in signing Cornet this summer after a standout season at Burnley.

It was also claimed there is a £15million relegation clause in the 25-year-old’s contract which is now active following the Clarets’ drop into the second tier.

The Ivory Coast international scored nine goals in 26 Premier League appearances during the 2021-22 season with his final goal coming on the final day of the season (22 May) in a 2-1 loss to Newcastle.

Wenham is open to the idea of Spurs signing the versatile attacker and suggested he could replace Steven Bergwijn, who has been heavily linked with a move away.

“I do like Cornet if I am honest,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I like that he can play loads of positions. £15million seems cheap for me. Say we flog Bergwijn for £25 million, I don’t see Cornet as a bad buy.

“If we are happy with Perisic and Sessegnon then forget it but I do like the fact he can play all over the pitch.

“He would be a good signing for a lot of teams, Tottenham being one of them.”

As per De Telegraaf’s Mike Verweij (3 June) Ajax have made an official offer to sign Bergwijn, 24.

It was also reported that agreeing the details of a contract with the Spurs winger is “a formality”.
