Ezri Konsa and Dominic Solanke react to Anthony Gordon’s Newcastle message
Anthony Gordon has showcased an eventful few weeks on social media as Newcastle United prepare for a return to action on Wednesday.
Eddie Howe’s side resume their push towards European football when they face Brentford in the Premier League on 2 April, playing for the first time since their historic EFL Cup triumph at Wembley on 16 March.
Newcastle’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool broke a 70-year trophy drought, and with the Magpies sat sixth in the table, two points off a Champions League place at present, they’ll hope to back that up with a win.
Howe managed to navigate beating the runaway Premier League leaders at Wembley without having Gordon at his disposal; the 24-year-old missing the final due to a suspension picked up in the FA Cup.
Anthony Gordon post sparks reaction from England stars
While Gordon was banned from featuring at Wembley as Newcastle claimed a first major honour since 1955, the England winger was still front and centre of the ensuing celebrations throughout the city.
Similarly, Gordon wasn’t able to make much of an impact on international duty over the following week, picking up an injury for England against Albania and being sent back to St. James’ Park for treatment.
Player | Appearances | Starts | Goals | Assists | Yellow/Red Cards |
Anthony Gordon | 34 | 30 | 9 | 7 | 4/1 |
Gordon, however, still embraced a momentous month for club and country, posting on Instagram (1 April) having been involved in both new history for Newcastle, and Thomas Tuchel’s maiden England squad.
Captioning his post – which included a photo of Ezri Konsa serving ice cream on England duty – with “a good few weeks”, Gordon received responses from Konsa and several other international team-mates.
Dominic Solanke commented; “not bad at all”, while Konsa saw the funny side of Gordon’s post and said: “My boy”, to the Newcastle number 10.
Anthony Gordon desperate to be part of further Newcastle success
Though he was still hailed as one of Newcastle’s cup final heroes despite playing no part at Wembley, Gordon will hope that he soon gets to taste the success of silverware in a black and white shirt.
Newcastle are anticipating another significant summer on the transfer front as they potentially prepare for another Champions League campaign, with Alexander Isak’s future coming under the microscope.
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Football Insider on 29 March that Newcastle can only compete for the likes of Matheus Cunha this summer if they achieve Champions League qualification.
If the Magpies do manage to get a deal for Cunha over the line, and still keep Isak, Eddie Howe will still be in no mood to displace Gordon on the left wing, given the impact he’s made since arriving from Everton.
