Fans react after international player agrees contract with Leeds

By Alex Stevens

Rob Green has agreed the terms of a new Leeds contract – and fans of the club have taken to Twitter to express their delight.

The Championship giants announced on their official website and media channels on Saturday evening that the veteran goalkeeper has signed a 12-month extension to his current deal.

The deal will keep 12-time England international Green, 37, at the club until the summer of 2018.

Leeds explained that Green has triggered an appearance-related clause in the contract that he signed when he joined on a free transfer last summer, 12 hours after Football Insider revealed that new documents had been registered by the club with the Football Association on 23 February.

Some sections of the Elland Road support were unconvinced by the keeper earlier on in the season and did not consider him an upgrade on Marco Silvestri, who he had replaced as the No1.

But Green has won over fans with his performances during the last few months and they were unanimous in their verdict that the new deal is well deserved.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Green has started all 38 of Leeds’ Championship encounters this season and kept his 14th clean sheet of the campaign as they defeated high flying Brighton 2-0 at Elland Road on Saturday evening.

The keeper was hailed by former Elland Road striker Noel Whelan as one of the two outstanding players in the Leeds team that caused an upset.

Leeds are well on course for a place in the end-of-season play-offs, after the win over Brighton lifted their points tally to 69, eight ahead of seventh-placed Fulham.

Garry Monk’s side retain hopes of an automatic promotion spot, although they are still eight adrift of second-placed Brighton.
