Man United got the point they needed to secure their runner-up spot in the Premier League in a turgid 0-0 draw with West Ham on Thursday night, but fans have seemingly had enough of enforcer Chris Smalling.
He helped to keep a clean sheet but even that didn’t save him from huge criticism from United fans after a performance that reflected what United are all about at the moment.
He almost gifted a goal to West Ham in the first half after he sliced a clearance back into the six-yard box, and one fan said that he’s a “disaster waiting to happen”.
Another said that he was as useless as ever and urged the club to sell him, while another said he was “frightening” – and not in a good way.
Despite finishing as runners-up in the league it’s been a disappointing season for United, not least for the manner in which they’ve gone about games like this. It’s far removed from the United of old under Alex Ferguson.
And fans think Smalling, reportedly on £80k-a-week wages, typifies this new United under Jose Mourinho.
Here are the best reactions to Smalling’s display at the London Stadium:
oh phil smalling and chris jones. absolutely useless like me trying to get your name right.

Jesse Lingard easily been United's best player again IMO, Sanchez busy Pogba lackadaisical, Smalling frightening and not on a good way #MUFC
