'Excellent', 'Brings unique qualities' - Fans react to reported key Tottenham contract development

By Richard Parks
Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to express their satisfaction that the club are reportedly set to extend Erik Lamela’s contract.
ESPN FC claim that the north Londoners are weighing up the possibility of activating an option in the Argentina international’s current agreement to tie him down until the summer of 2020.
Lamela’s current £65,000-a-week deal, which was agreed when he joined from Roma in August 2013 for a then-club record £30million, is due to expire in 2019 but Tottenham inserted a clause allowing them to extend it by another year.
ESPN FC report that Spurs are ready to trigger the option as it would protect the value of the player, who is one of only two senior first teamers along with Toby Alderweireld not to have signed a long-term contract since the start of last season.
Many Tottenham fans value Lamela highly and responded by urging the club to press ahead with tying down a player who “brings unique qualities” and keeping him would represent “excellent value”.
A minority were less rapt, with one complaining that the attacking midfielder has done little to warrant a new deal after doing little since returning in late October from over a year on the sidelines.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Lamela underwent double hip surgery last year and has gradually been re-integrated back into Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
The Argentine was given the nod to start in Tuesday’s 2-2 Champions League thriller against Juventus ahead of regular scorer Son Heung-Min and £26million January signing Lucas Moura.
It was a move that paid dividends as Lamela’s energy and touch play helped Spurs gain a foothold in the game after they went two goals down early on.
Pochettino must now decide whether to start Lamela again in Sunday’s FA Cup fifth-round clash against League One outfit Rochdale.
In other Tottenham news, Daniel Levy has jetted off on a transatlantic mission to seal a sensational £20million-a-year Spurs deal.
