Fans react to referee performance in Rangers loss v Motherwell

By James Black

Rangers fans have savaged referee Steven McLean after his performance in the 2-0 Scottish League Cup defeat to Motherwell – and even fans of other Scottish clubs have joined in.

The referee had an absolutely horrid 90 minutes at Hampden as he got virtually every big decision wrong.

McLean could have sent off at least three or four players but instead opted to send both managers to the stands before becoming card happy towards the end and booking anyone.

The worst decision of the match, arguably, came when he ignored Fabio Cardoso taking an elbow to the face – leaving the defender with a broken nose and blood all over his face – and allowed play to continue.

When Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha protested the decision, McLean sent him and his counterpart Stephen Robinson to the stand after tempers flared.

Fans on both sides were baffled by the referee’s performance and took to social media to vent their anger.

Here are some of their comments:

Despite Scottish fans almost universally panning McLean’s performance, there was one dissenting opinion – Motherwell boss Robinson – who thought the ref had a “good game” as quoted by Radio Clyde’s official Twitter account.

Fans across the country will now be anxioulsy checking referee appointments for Wednesday’s Scottish Premiership fixtures in the hope McLean’s name doesn’t appear next to their club.
