Noel Whelan has been left raving after Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti revealed Dominic Calvert-Lewin is closing in on a new contract.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has heralded the centre-forward for his impressive turnaround under the Italian boss.

Ancelotti confirmed at his press conference that the 22-year-old was “very close” to penning a new contract at Goodison Park, insisting it would be an “important” deal for the club.

Whelan says that Calvert-Lewin looks like a different player since the change of manager, tipping him to go and get a chance on the international stage as well.

Whelan told Football Insider: “Massive, he’s been fantastic and I’m sure he’s going to get an England call-up as well. I’m sure Gareth Southgate, with the amount of injuries, he’s been catching the eye every single week.

“It will be interesting to see how he copes with the demands on the international stage as well.

“I don’t think he’d leave, I think he’s happy now. A striker who wasn’t scoring goals, it didn’t look like he’d be a 20-goal scorer, why would you want to leave? Not many people are going to have the opportunity to work under Ancelotti.”

Calvert-Lewin has scored eight goals in the 10 Premier League games Ancelotti has taken charge of this season, with a total of 15 strikes under his belt.

He has played 124 times for the Toffees to date, finding the back of the net 32 times.
