Rangers defender James Tavernier believes Steven Gerrard’s coaching staff has improved the standards at Ibrox since their arrival – and admitted it “needed” to happen after the last few seasons.
Gerrard brought Gary McAllister, Tom Culshaw, Michael Beale and Jordan Milsom to Ibrox with him – in addition to Colin Stewart remaining on staff – and Tavernier has been delighted with their impact.
The Gers ace also admits it is a “big thing” to have Leeds United legend McAllister at Ibrox – saying it is “great” to have the former Scotland captain at Ibrox.
“I know he is the gaffer now and you do get those little moments when you find yourself going, ‘That’s Steven Gerrard over there’. Having Gary McAllister here as well is a big thing to me because of Leeds United. He is basically a Yorkshireman now so it is great to have him and his character around,” Tavernier told RangersTV, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“Michael Beale too is great, his knowledge of the game is superb. We also have a bunch of Scousers in now and it is fun, it is a good set-up. They have raised the standard higher which has always needed to be done because it has dropped over the years.
“Straight away I have noticed the standard and where he wants it and the boys have responded really well. Even from doing small passing drills and our little boxes the level has already gone up.
“The whole new staff who the gaffer has brought in are fantastic, there is a great combination that they have got going on. We are all enjoying the training and we all believe in what he wants us to do.”
Football Insider verdict:
The new staff have impressed since their arrival and all come to Ibrox with a fantastic reputation. Gerrard and his backroom staff need to make sure the Light Blues squad are ready to go for the start of the new campaign. The Gers players seem to have responded really well to the new staff and they appear to be making a real impact on the squad. With a few weeks left until the Gers first game of the season, it won’t be long until fans get their first real sight of the new-look Light Blues. The Gers squad weren’t as quick to praise the coaching staff last summer as they had their first pre-season under Pedro Caixinha and it speaks volumes how much praise they have for the new staff. With experience at a host of clubs, the new Gers staff have a great background to build on and rejuvenate the Ibrox giants.
