Finance expert issues £132m Arsenal claim after new arrival sealed

New Arsenal chief commercial officer Juliet Slot will be tasked with closing the “big gap” between the club’s and Manchester United’s revenue, according to Doctor Dan Plumley.

The sports finance expert, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Gunners were £132million behind their Premier League rivals in commercial earnings in 2020.

According to Sport Business (6 December), Arsenal have appointed Juliet Slot to replace outgoing chief commercial officer Peter Silverstone.

Speaking on her appointment, Slot detailed how she was “excited” to work with a “hugely loyal and engaged” fanbase.

In their accounts for the year ended 31 May 2020, the London club boasted commercial income of £142.3million.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs what would be expected of Slot at the Emirates, Plumley said: “The aim is to grow commercial revenue.

“It is a big opportunity for clubs as there is no restrictions on how many deals you can sign. There is unlimited potential. Clubs are looking more and more towards that to try and diversify revenue.

“If you look at the numbers with Arsenal, it is interesting. In 2020, Arsenal’s commercial revenue was £142million while Manchester United’s was £279million.

“United of course are the market leader in the Premier League but you have got a big gap there. The remit for Juliet Slot will be to close that gap.

“The bigger clubs see growth potential in the commercial side of the business.”
