Colback delivers message to Newcastle fans about future

By Danny Wright

Jack Colback believes that the Newcastle supporters have a lot to look forward to next season as they return to the Premier League.

The 27-year-old has also admitted that the Magpies have been struggling for form as the finishing line was within their grasp.

Rafa Benitez’s side sealed promotion to the top-flight with two games to spare on Monday night when they eased to a 4-1 victory against Preston.

Colback came off the bench for the final 14 minutes of the victory but has come under fire from sections of the Newcastle support in recent weeks for his poor performances.

Fans have struggled to take to the midfielder, who signed for Newcastle from their bitter North-East rivals Sunderland.

“It is a great achievement,” said Colback, as quoted by the Sunderland Echo. “That is not only for the club but the fans, who now have something to look forward to, especially after the pain of relegation last summer.

“I think across the season we have been very consistent.

“Yes, we have had the odd wobble, which will happen at any level.

“And recently we have struggled as we have got closer to the finish line. But it definitely feels good to finally get over that finishing line.”

Newcastle had won just two of their eight games prior to their victory against Preston earlier this week and have lost ground in their bid to win the Championship title, with Brighton now four points clear at the top with two games left.

Colback has made 32 appearances across all competitions for the Toon this season, supplying two assists.

He was a regular feature in the starting XI in 2017 but was axed from the squad for the Burton and Sheffield Wednesday clashes earlier this month.

It has now been six games since Colback was named in Benitez’s starting line-up.

In other Newcastle news, the club are to give Benitez the green light to make major summer signings.
