Aston Villa’s rivalry with Birmingham City is no doubt one of the best spectacles in English football and is seriously under-rated by the London-based media conglomerates who would rather claim Tottenham and West Ham is a bigger game.
One of the major caveats of the Second City derby is how there has been such a gulf between Villa and Blues at various times in history.
However as long as neither Blues go down or Villa go up this term, there will be guaranteed to be at least two more derby clashes with the two sides in the same division for the third year running next term.
Since dropping into the Championship, Villa have won both home games while Birmingham have earned draws in both games at St Andrew’s.
Neither have really been jaw-dropping spectacles, but that does not mean that there have not been any over the years.
In the history of the two West Midlands clubs, the Villains have come out on top 55 times, while surprisingly losing 38 times despite having much more glory in terms of silverware.
Perhaps that stat proves the old cliche that form goes completely out of the window in games of this magnitude.
