Folarin Balogun: Newcastle rejected ex-Arsenal forward, now they’ll need to pay double

Folarin Balogun’s stunning Monaco form is attracting attention from Newcastle United ahead of this summer – but he could already be wearing a black-and-white jersey.

The Magpies have been linked with the 24-year-old on several occasions over the years, including during his breakout year with Stade Reims.

The former Arsenal youngster scored his first goals for his boyhood club in the 2020-21 season, netting against Molde and Dundalk in the Europa League.

Balogun would be subsequently loaned out to Middlesbrough, and in the 2022-23 season, Stade Reims – there, the striker exploded.

Newcastle transfer chiefs could have signed him after that season, and they will need to pay far more if they want to sign the Monaco forward this summer.

Newcastle United can avenge mistake by signing Folarin Balogun

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider last month that Nick Woltemade could leave Newcastle this summer, after a disappointing first season.

With Yoane Wissa also failing to impress, the Magpies could be left searching for a new talisman up front.

Balogun could be just that man, and he may well have been a Newcastle player already, had they moved more quickly.

The striker was coming off the back of a 21-goal Ligue 1 season on loan at Stade Reims when the Premier League side registered their interest in 2023.

But a move never materialised, and Monaco ultimately paid Arsenal around £35million to sign the United States international.

The following two seasons went poorly for Balogun, but he now finds himself among the most in-form strikers in Europe.

The 24-year-old has netted in each of his last six Ligue 1 games and has scored three goals against PSG in recent weeks.

According to Jeunes Footeux, Balogun is back on Newcastle’s target list this summer as they look to find consistent goals.

Balogun’s glorious goal vs Marseille

Balogun is leading a charge back up the Ligue 1 table for Monaco, and the striker scored a stunning winner against Marseille on Sunday.

Capitalising on a loose pass by the defender, the 24-year-old latched onto the ball, heading it past CJ Egan-Riley and towards goal.

Once inside the box, Balogun elected to chip the ball, delivering a stunning dink that looped well over Geronimo Rulli and into the back of the net.

It was a goal born of pure confidence, and it said everything about how the striker is playing at the moment.

Should Newcastle want to sign him, they may have to act quickly to avoid making the same mistake. Balogun will lead the United States at this summer’s World Cup, and he may well attract significant attention.
