Signed as a left-back in the same window as Per Mertersacker, the Brazilian didn’t have the same impact as the enforcer and left after just 18 months.
The consensus was that he was too slow and had a poor sense of position on the pitch, but that wasn’t the main reason why he was vilified by fans.
They never forgave him for swapping shirts with Man United’s Robin Van Persie at half-time at Old Trafford, which led to a rebuke from Wenger who said he would “never do it again”.
