Forget new signings, these Celtic youngsters are the future

COMMENT By Emma Sanders

Brendan Rodgers is looking to improve his squad in the January transfer window but Celtic already have a host of young academy stars who could potentially bring success to the club in the future.

Football Insider selects three players who could feature for the first team next season and prove why Celtic don’t have to spend big to add quality for the future.

Calvin Miller

The 19-year-old midfielder has already made his first team bow after he featured for 63 minutes in last month’s victory against Patrick Thistle and he is expected to appear yet again in 2017. Miller was excellent for the reserves in their most recent victory over Rangers as he scored the winner in a fierce youth encounter. He’s comfortable on the ball and is full of confidence so would shine alongside Scott Brown in midfield.

The club’s youngster ever goalscorer produced the best moments in his career last season when he scored on his debut for Celtic in the final game of the season against Motherwell at the age of just 16. Aitchison is a regular for the reserves and despite only turning full-time in February 2015, the striker has shown huge potential and if his rapid progression continues, he’ll likely make a breakthrough sooner rather than later.

Aidan Nesbitt

The attacking midfielder is currently on loan at Morton but he has been impressive and has notched up 15 league appearances for their first team since joining in August. He also enjoyed a bright loan spell with Patrick Thistle in the second half of the 2015-16 season after making his debut for Celtic in a League Cup match in September. He could be re-introduced to the Celtic supporters at the end of the campaign.

In other Celtic news, Rodgers has warned his players they could be axed.
