Jack Clarke is set to sign his first professional Leeds United contract and it is a brilliant bit of business for the club.
According to Football Insider sources, Clarke is set to sign the deal on Thursday to mark his 17th birthday in a move that will hopefully deter Premier League sides who have been showing an interest.
The hot prospect has been prolific this season, scoring nine in seven games for the U-18s and the striker’s ability to score goals hasn’t gone unnoticed by manager Thomas Christiansen.
The player has been training with the first team on a regular basis, which just shows how highly the club and management team already rate him.
Getting the player attached to a contract now, guarantees the player’s future at the club as he eyes a passage into Christiansen’s first team – and he definitely has the talent to progress.
At the age of just 17 he could be banging in goals for Leeds for years to come and a guaranteed goal scorer is exactly what Christiansen needs.
When you look at the Championship’s top goalscorers last season, two of the top four were promoted with their teams and the others made moves to get Premier League football this season.
That includes Leeds’ Chris Wood who left the club for the temptation of Premier League football with Burnely.
Leeds managed to sign some pretty decent stop gaps in the summer and one in particular, Samu Saiz, has been dazzling the Leeds fans this season.
Saiz has been a sensation since his move to the Whites in the summer, scoring eight goals in his 18 appearances across all competitions.
However, his performances are likely to see him move on – in the summer if Leeds don’t get promoted, and they might not even be able to hold onto him if they go up.
That makes homegrown talent like Jack Clarke even more valuable.
The Leeds hierarchy will be looking at Clarke as the future. A player that will have loyalty to the club that nurtured him and who can fire them into the Premier League and keep them there.
Saiz might have been a fantastic signing, but getting Clarke’s signature could be Victor Orta’s best bit of business yet.
