Davie Hay has revealed his bafflement at the performance of Celtic’s star striker Moussa Dembele against Anderlecht.
The 21-year-old Frenchman was out of sorts as the Celts limped to a 1-0 defeat against the Belgian champions.
The former Celtic boss didn’t pull any punches in his assessment of Dembele’s form.
“I have to be honest and say that his performance against Anderlecht on Tuesday night was as bad as I’ve seen from him in a green and white jersey” he said, as quoted on the Evening Times website.
“Dembele is normally so strong in holding up the ball but he struggled in times. There was also a lack of energy to chase down the ball and put pressure on the Anderlecht defenders when it was needed.”
Despite the sub-standard showing against Anderlecht, Hay believes that Dembele’s previous performances in the Hoops will still earn him a lucrative move to the English Premier League.
“I still firmly believe that he will eventually move on from Celtic Park for big money. Take his poor performance from Tuesday out of the equation, he’s capable of anything on his day and he will get back to his best for Celtic,” he said.
The Daily Mail has reported that newly promoted Premier League side Brighton are the latest side to be linked with a move for the French under 21 international, with a bid of £20million being mentioned.
Dembele has endured a frustrating season with the Scottish champions.
Injuries have curtailed his appearances and he has only recently returned to full fitness.
The striker seemed back to his best against PSG in Celtic’s previous Champions League match, when he scored the game’s opening goal in under a minute.
However, he didn’t impress in the game against Anderlecht.
Despite the injury problems, Dembele has the decent record of eight goals in 16 appearances this season and he’ll be hoping to add to that tally when Celtic play Neil Lennon’s Hibs in their next league match.
