Former Rangers goalkeeper Antti Niemi has boldly predicted that summer signing Alfredo Morelos will build upon a promising start to score 20-plus goals for the club this season.
Morelos, 21, was recruited by boss Pedro Caixinha during what has been a busy summer transfer window from HJK Helsinki.
The Colombian penned a three-year-deal with the Gers worth around £1 million, and has since shown his stunning goal-scoring capabilities in Glasgow.
Since joining the club, the former Helsinki striker has made five competitive debuts where he impressively scored three goals in the past two games.
The former Inbox keeper Niemi believes that Morelos will have a fantastic opening season at the Glaswegian club and predicts that he will score almost double the goals which forward Kenny Miller provided during the 2016/17 season.
Miller managed to net 11 goals during the club’s previous campaign, where the Light Blues finished in third position.
Niemi said: “I definitely think he can be the guy that scores 20-plus goals for Rangers because he has been so prolific so far in his career.”
“But as any striker will tell you, he requires good service from good players behind him,” he said, and was quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times. “It seems to me that Rangers have more quality this season and that they can get the quality supply in to Morelos.”
The Finnish stopper, who is now a goalkeeping coach, spoke about the difference between the Scottish Premiership and the leagues which Morelos has previously played in.
“The standard and the tempo in the Scottish Premiership is different to what he was used to in Finland but I think he has it in him to be a success,” he told the newspaper.
“I see he scored against Hibs at the weekend and he got two in the League Cup game last week so that’s a good start for him.
“Three goals in two starts is a great way to get your Rangers career going because as with all strikers, confidence is such a big thing.”
Rangers had a positive start to their season with a 2-1 away at Motherwell in the Premiership and a stunning 6-0 victory against Dunfermline in the League Cup.
However, during their first home match of the Premiership, the Light Blues fell short with a 3-2 defeat to newly promoted club Hibernian.
Pedro Caixinha’s side are set to battle against Heart of Midlothian at the Ibrox stadium on Saturday, where Morelos will hope to add to his excellent goal-scoring tally so far.
