Birmingham City are putting the finishing touches to signing George Friend from Middlesbrough after he underwent a medical last night, Football Insider can reveal.

The Midlands club have agreed terms with the left-back, 32, and are expected to complete the deal in the coming hours.

A Birmingham source has told Football Insider that Friend is expected to put pen to paper on a two-year contract with the option of a third year.

This comes after Football Insider revealed yesterday evening that Birmingham had swooped for the longstanding Boro favourite.

He is set to be reunited at St Andrews with his former manager Aitor Karanka, who has just been appointed the new Blues boss.

Friend’s contract had expired at Boro at the end of last month when the Championship season came to an end.

The north-east outfit offered the long-standing defender a new deal to extend his stay at the club beyond eight years.

But he has rejected it in favour of a fresh start and a reunion with Karanka, who oversaw Boro’s promotion from the Championship to the Premier League when he was in charge there.

The defender made 139 appearances under the Spanish boss between 2013 and 2016 and he has played more games under Karanka than any other manager in his career.

Birmingham are yet to make a signing this summer but a handful of players have left the club led by brilliant youngster Jude Bellingham.

The teenage midfielder secured a big-money move to German giants Borussia Dortmund last month, less than a month after his 17th birthday.
