Danny Mills says that Aston Villa would be getting their hands on a “very good addition” if they could sign West Brom’s Matt Phillips this summer.
The former England full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says that the Baggies’ flyer is the sort of player who can strike fear into the hearts of defenders with his pace and directness down the flanks.
As revealed exclusively by Football Insider, the Villans have made an initial move over signing the 28-year-old wide man as they continue to build a squad ready for Premier League football.
Mills says that Dean Smith would be getting himself on a talented winger if he can get Phillips to make the short move from the Hawthorns to Villa Park, suggesting it could also be a decently priced switch.
He told Football Insider: “Players with pace will always be given the opportunity because it frightens defenders to death, it’s very, very difficult to play against and therefore, if they’ve got that opportunity to do that, then it’s great.
“It will be on a relatively small budget compared to bringing in established Premier League players. It would be a very good addition to the squad.”
Phillips, who is a 14-cap Scotland international, featured both as an out-and-out winger and as a wing-back for West Brom last season with 33 appearances, five goals and six assists across all competitions.
He has 109 Premier League games and 162 Championship games worth of experience during his career, having played regularly for the likes of Blackpool, QPR and Wycombe Wanderers before his move to the Baggies.
In other Aston Villa news, it can be REVEALED that the club have agreed personal terms with their 11th signing of the summer.
