Should Tottenham pull off a deal for Benfica attacking-midfielder Bryan Cristante this summer, it begs the question of what that means for the future of Harry Winks at White Hart Lane.
The 22-year-old midfielder looked set to create waves around the footballing community in the earlier parts of this season.
After starring in the centre of the park against Real Madrid in the Champions League, there was much talk about how Winks would go on to dominate the position both for his club and his country in this summer’s World Cup.
But, it hasn’t gone to plan for the England playmaker.
And an ankle injury has not only halted his progression in the side but seemingly has ended it altogether – at least for the remainder of this season.
Token FA Cup appearances against Newport County and Rochdale have been about the pinnacle for the 22-year-old since the heights of Madrid.
But even against lower league opponents, Winks has looked a shadow of himself.
And now, with the club eyeing Cristante this summer, should a reasonable offer comes in for the midfielder it will most likely be curtains for the Hemel-Hempstead born star.
The twice-capped Italian international, 23, has been scoring for fun against some of Serie A’s top sides, whilst on loan at Atalanta this season and has attracted interest because of his form.
It won’t be easy to prise him from the Serie A side due to a buying option they have on the ace, but if they do it’ll be time to bid farewell to the England star.
