With the news that Tottenham target Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure is set to be sold this summer, the future of first team mainstay Eric Dier has suddenly become shrouded in doubt.
According to The Mirror, the Hornets ace is one of a pair of Watford stars who could be shipped out this summer in order to balance the books at Vicarage Road, and the Frenchman’s form from the centre of the park is said to have caught the attention of Mauricio Pochettino.
Rated at £40million, the 25-year-old has been a standout performer this season, despite the Premier League minnows hardly setting the division alight.
Doucoure’s seven goals from midfield has also reportedly alerted Arsenal and Liverpool to the player’s availability.
However, the potential arrival of the 25-year-old must leave questions over the future of Dier, who has been a regular in the Lillywhites’ starting XI with 41 appearances this season.
The England midfielder has been criticised lately for his lacklustre displays, passing sideways, and going missing in games by the Spurs faithful, while Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier has even accused the 24-year-old of being overrated.
Dier has a contract in North London until 2021 but given his so-so form this season, Pochettino may be tempted to listen to offers for the player, and should be doing so if the Argentinian supremo can land Doucoure.
Based on performances this season, the Frenchman would be an upgrade on the England player, and if the Watford star does make the switch to the Lilywhites, Spurs will be best selling up.
