Gary O’Neil sack latest: O’Rourke reacts to latest twist

Southampton boss Russell Martin doesn’t have the same backing as Wolves manager Gary O’Neil, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that while Martin, 38, and O’Neil, 41, are in similar positions, the Southampton manager has less good faith with his board and his counterpart at Wolves.

Football Insider revealed (October 11) that Martin is fighting for his job amid ‘massive scrutiny’ from within the boardroom of his club following their dismal start to the season.

Both clubs are winless after their first seven Premier League games, with Southampton only ahead of Wolves in 19th by virtue of goal difference.

It’s understood that the game against Leicester will be pivotal for Martin, with the board working on a plan should they decide to relieve the young manager of his duties.

Russell Martin and Gary O’Neil fighting for Southampton and Wolves jobs

Southampton and Wolves are set to face reigning champions Man City within their next two fixtures, which could prove to be tough outings for the two managers.

Wolves’ biggest problem is at the back having conceded 21 goals from their first seven Premier League games, but unlike Southampton, they’re able to score.

The South Coast club are the lowest-scoring side in the league, finding the net just five times compared to Wolves’ nine.

A win for either side in their next fixture could see them climb out of the relegation zone and into relative safety, with Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town also winless.
