Gerrard is spot-on after Defoe's 'swipe during Rangers interview - Macca
Frank McAvennie insists Rangers striker Jermain Defoe’s ‘swipe’ at Steven Gerrard wasn’t serious.
The former Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to Defoe’s comments about his new role at Ibrox.
Defoe, 38, signed a new deal at Rangers this summer and will stay at the club in a player-coach role.
The ex-Tottenham forward has been involved in the Gers pre-season plans but only as a player.
Speaking to the Rangers site on 12th July, Defoe admitted he hasn’t yet started his coaching duties.
He admitted he hasn’t even had the Gers new red training kit on and said he will be introduced to coaching “at some point”.

McAvennie insists this was just a throwaway line from the veteran forward.
“They have so many strikers there,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“I can’t imagine he’ll be handed the coaching stuff until after pre-season.
“Rangers will be thinking they might need him, that’s what it will be.
“He might be having a wee swipe at Steven Gerrard but in a joking way.
“He sounds annoyed but Gerrard has to make sure he’s fit and ready to go before starting that new role.
“He needs to be sharp and everything with Morelos, who knows, he could play more than he thinks.
“It will be a gradual thing for Defoe.”
On 26th June, Football Insider revealed Rangers have told Porto that they want £13million for Alfredo Morelos this summer.
The Colombian has one year left on his Gers contract and has been the subject of much transfer speculation in recent years.
