Steven Gerrard: This is where Liverpool need to strengthen this summer

By Matt Bullin

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has claimed his former club need to invest in a left-back and another attacker if they want to challenge for next season’s Premier League title.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp was forced to utilise James Milner at left-back for much of the 2016-17 campaign, as a drastic loss of form from Alberto Moreno saw him rarely played.

Meanwhile, the German’s forward options were also somewhat hamstrung as Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi and Sadio Mane all spent time on the sidelines due to injuries.

However, he still managed to guide the Merseysiders to a top-four finish in the Premier League last term.

In an interview with BT Sport, Gerrard spoke of Klopp’s ability to attract big names to Anfield.

“I think we’ve got a fantastic manager at the helm, who will hopefully attract a few big names to complete the jigsaw,” he said.

“I think we need someone in the left-back position, James [Milner] has done a fantastic job out there, but it would be nice to have another option out there as well.

“And maybe one more attacking player to give some more firepower and help unlock the defences that are really narrow and compact.

“I don’t think we need major reconstruction, I think it’s just a couple of pieces of the jigsaw left and I’m really happy with where we are at the moment.”

Liverpool are yet to make a big-name signing this summer, but they have secured the services of highly-rated youngster Dominic Solanke, who made a move from Chelsea.

Gerrard spent 17 years as a player at Anfield and during that spell he played 701 league and cup games for the club, which yielded 184 goals and 105 assists.

In other Liverpool news, Klopp is closing in on a deal for this 19-goal attacker.
