Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been holidaying in Ibiza ahead of returning to Glasgow for pre-season training on June 15th – and after being pictured with Burnley defender Phil Bardsley it could hint at a possible swoop.
The Gers boss and Bardsley were pictured on Bardsley’s wife Tanya’s personal Instagram account at a David Guetta concert on the sunshine island.
Gerrard will likely only have Declan John and James Tavernier available as senior full-backs going into the new season with departures for Lee Wallace and Lee Hodson expected this summer.
Bringing Bardsley back to Ibrox would give cover on both sides for the Gers and bring a hugely experienced defender back to the club – 12 years after an ill-fated loan spell under Paul le Guen.
At 32, Bardsley still has plenty left in the tank and struggled to hold down a regular first-team place at Burnley last season, making 15 appearances for the Clarets.
Turf Moor to Ibrox seems to be a well-trodden path in recent years with Kyle Lafferty, Matt Gilks, Joey Barton and Scott Arfield all swapping Lancashire for Glasgow.
Bardsley would make a good addition and offer Gerrard a bit more steel in defence – maybe even opening up the chance for Tavernier or John to be used in a more attacking role at times – as he tries to stop Celtic from winning an eighth consecutive title.
There’s clearly a personaly relationship between the pair and it could be that Gerrard is simply looking for someone that he knows and trusts to come in and give him an ally in the squad.
Burley would be unlikely to want much of a fee for the defender, with only a year left on his deal, and a return to Ibrox could be the perfect chance for Bardsley to end his career at the top.
