Gerrard ‘raging’ with his lazy Rangers squad after what I’ve seen – McAvennie
Frank McAvennie insists Steven Gerrard will be raging with his Rangers squad after a drop in performances this season.
The Celtic icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the Gers’ recent run of results.
Rangers have struggled in Europe this season and have failed to match last season’s electric start to league football.
An Alfredo Morelos strike saw an underwhelming Rangers edge past Alashkert in Europa League qualifying last week.
This came after the club had been knocked out of the Champions League and lost their unbeaten league record.
McAvennie claims some Gers players simply aren’t turning up for games and insisted failure to qualify for the Europa League proper would be an “unimaginable disaster”.
“Rangers need this [qualification],” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Their European trips last year were magnificent but it’s not the same this year.
“I think Gerrard is raging with that squad. They look like they are turning up and expecting to roll over whoever they play.
“He understands better than most, you can’t do that. You have to be on it every game.
“Whenever someone players Rangers, it’s their cup final. That’s why you need to go to that next level.
“It would be an utter disaster if Rangers didn’t make the groups.”

Rangers travel to Armenia on Thursday night looking to confirm their place in the Europa League group stage.
John Lundstram will miss the game after he was sent off in Thursday’s first leg at Ibrox.
In other news, Lundstram is the ‘luckiest man in Ibrox’ after what I’ve seen at Gers.
