Steven Gerrard makes admission about why he couldn’t play for Rangers

Steven Gerrard has rubbished Craig Bellamy’s claims that he could pull on his boots again after being named as Rangers manager – joking that the former Celtic star hadn’t seen him train with Liverpool’s Under-18 side.

Gerrard will take up the reins at Ibrox on June 1st and hasn’t played since leaving LA Galaxy in November 2016.

The Gers boss admitted his “mobility has gone” as he rubbished the idea he could register himself as a player as he takes on his first managerial role.

“He obviously hasn’t watched me in the training sessions with the Under-18s then has he? The mobility has gone,” Gerrard said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

Football Insider verdict

Gerrard isn’t stupid enough to come out of retirement and play for Rangers. The 37-year-old faces a massive job as it is, never mind adding the responsibility of playing too. With the Gers without a title since 2011, the former Liverpool icon is going to have to hit the ground running if he is going to impress in his first managerial position. The Light Blues would love a player of Gerrard’s quality in the centre of midfield but there’s no way that he could even consider pulling his boots on. There are a host of promising young midfielders coming through the ranks at Ibrox just now and if Gerrard can pass on some of his skill to those players it’ll do Rangers much more benefit in the long-term than Gerrard coming out of retirement would. After not playing for 18 months, it would probably be too much for Gerrard to get himself back to top condition and ready to play – and do himself justice at the same time.

In other Rangers news, both the Gers and Celtic are in the running to sign this £100,000-a-week Premier League midfielder who will be available in the summer.
