Gerrard told to get Mings and Aston Villa's other star man on board 'first thing' - pundit

Paul Robinson has insisted Steven Gerrard must focus on getting the best out of Danny Ings and Tyrone Mings after taking over at Aston Villa.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England goalkeeper suggested the 41-year-old needs to get the pair “on side” to get the best out of his new squad.

Speaking in his first interview as the Villans boss (15th November), revealed his priority is “making everyone come together and be unified”.

Villa currently sit 16th in the Premier League table after a disappointing start to the campaign.

Robinson suggested summer signing Ings and club captain Mings have been two of the biggest underperformers this term.

As such, Robinson tipped Gerrard to work on winning them over quickly.

Robinson told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Where he has picked the team up from, there’s only one way, in my opinion, they can go with this squad of players. Gerrard is very good at working his players.

“Danny Ings hasn’t performed to the level he should. Tyrone Mings hasn’t performed to the levels he has in previous seasons.

“First thing he’s got to do is get these two players on side. Find a system and get the players playing for him. I believe he can do that.

“I think he has seen an opportunity there to take one of the giants of English football up the leagues.

“They’re not at their lowest ebb, fifth bottom in the Premier League. They’re not going to get any lower than that this season. Anything he does this season is a success.

“It’s the same as when Brendan Rodgers left Celtic, really. Rodgers left Celtic before the end of the season. He had a good look at Leicester for half a season.

“They were in no danger of relegation, they weren’t challenging at the top of the league. It’s what Steven’s got. They’re not really in a relegation battle, they’re not challenging for Europe.”
