'Get a grip' - Exclusive: Noel Whelan reacts to early Leeds team news v Bristol City

Noel Whelan believes that Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is making the right call by keeping faith in goalkeeper Kiko Casilla.

The former Leeds striker and lifelong fan at Elland Road, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says the Spaniard will know his recent run of form is some way of the required standard for the promotion hopefuls.

Having seen the shot-stopper make a dreadful error against Brentford in midweek, Bielsa came out and confirmed that he would be starting with the former Real Madrid man versus Bristol City.

Whelan insists that despite his errors, Casilla is the right man to play between the sticks and that it would be the wrong time to make any drastic changes.

Asked if Bielsa was making the right call, Whelan told Football Insider: “I think he is. I’ve said so many times, goalkeepers at most levels, even Premier League goalkeepers – we saw it last week with Everton’s goalkeeper, England’s number one – making a mistake.

“You’ve got to take on board that’s going to happen. He has the experience but I think it’d be the wrong time to change goalkeepers, in my opinion. I think you’ve got to put trust in him.

“Goals come from different areas and mistakes happen before it gets to that goal. Let’s not forget about the saves that he has made and the good points about his game as well. It’s an important part of the field and he chose his profession and place to play.

“You’ve got to keep faith with him. He will know the mistakes that he’s made are not good enough for his standards and he needs to kind of get a grip of his game.”

Casilla has played 53 times for Leeds since joining in January 2018, featuring in all but one of their matches across all competitions this season.
