Giovanni van Bronckhorst has sent 'statement' to five Rangers players - pundit
Giovanni van Bronckhorst has sent a “statement” to Rangers’ summer signings, according to Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aberdeen and Leeds United striker delivered his verdict after five new signings were named as substitutes for the 3-0 loss to Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday night (14 September).
Antonio Colak, Rabbi Matondo and Malik Tilman were all introduced from the bench while Ben Davies and Ridvan Yilmaz remained unused substitutes.
There were no summer signings named in the starting XI as Tom Lawrence and John Souttar missed out through injury.
As quoted by club media after the Napoli game, Van Bronckhorst insisted he picked a side to win the game and was not focused on whether it included new players.
“Well, look, they’ve lost some really important players, there’s no doubt, but they’ve made a lot of money from doing that as well,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Ewan Kingsbury.

“This is probably not down to Van Bronckhorst. Yes, you’ve got to work with your technical director on sourcing these players as replacements.
“Sometimes it takes a little bit more time to adjust to football at a different club but they don’t really have time for that.
“He’s probably putting out a statement saying ‘Just because we bought you, it doesn’t mean you’re a permanent fixture’.
“He’s gone back to some of the old players, the old guard who know the football club, know what it’s all about.
“Nobody is safe at a football club. If you’re not doing your job you will find yourself on the bench or not in the squad at all.
“Maybe it’s a bit of a wake up call for players.”
