Shay Given believes that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley must back the club in the transfer market to enhance their chances of staying in the Premier League.
The Magpies are preparing themselves for their return to the top flight and manger Rafael Benitez is set to improve his squad in the window.
Ashley helped the north-east club secure promotion from the Championship at the first attempt last season and the club’s work in the transfer market proved crucial.
They decided to invest heavily by recruiting the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Ritchie to help them storm to the Championship title.
The Telegraph have reported that Ashley is set to hand Benitez a £70million transfer kitty to improve his squad this summer.
Ex-Newcastle goalkeeper Given feels that his former side need to strengthen if they are to remain in the top flight.
“There’s talk of them having X amount of pounds to spend in the summer and a lot of players coming in,” Given told talkSPORT. “It will be interesting to see if Mike Ashley backs Benitez and they go heavy in the transfer market because they need to strengthen of course to stay in the Premier League.”
Benitez will be looking to use his wealth of experience to bring in some top quality over the summer and it’s believed he is looking at improving his attacking options.
Newcastle’s main priority will be to avoid relegation next year and most fans feel they should be pushing towards a top-10 finish in the near future.
In other Newcastle transfer news, they are in talks with Chelsea about a loan move for their 19-year-old.
