Goldson contract saga has taken fresh twist at Rangers after new manager latest - Hutton

Alan Hutton has suggested Steven Gerrard’s departure could play a major role in contract negotiations between Rangers and Connor Goldson.

The former Gers full-back and Rangers TV pundit, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted some players may have committed their futures at Ibrox after talks with the 41-year-old.

Goldson is out of contract at the end of the season and revealed last month he had not spoken to his agent recently about a new deal.

Gerrard, who signed the defender from Brighton, left to join Aston Villa last week.

Rangers managed to tie Glen Kamara down to a new deal before the Liverpool legend’s departure.

However, Hutton admitted Gerrard’s exit could muddy the waters in future contract talks.

Asked if he thought a change of manager would impact Goldson’s future at Ibrox, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It could, it definitely could.

“If we take the likes of Ryan Kent and these guys too, I know they’re on long-term deals but they probably signed because Steven Gerrard was there.

“He could attract a certain type of player. The likes of Glen Kamara, when we weren’t sure if he was going to sign a deal, then he did.

“It was probably through talks with Steven Gerrard, what he wanted for him and how he could improve him.

“He had a big draw, just him being there as a manager. So that could affect things moving forward. I think backroom staff, fans, they all see this.

“There was a higher quality of player coming in because he was the manager. They wanted to play for him. So it could affect things.”

Goldson has been a mainstay for Rangers since joining in 2018.

He has made 183 appearances across all competitions to date.
