Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness believes that Tottenham must go out and spend big money this summer in order to prove to fans that they are the real deal.
The north London club are near completing another successful campaign under manager Mauricio Pochettino and they are set for a second placed finish with two matches left.
But, fans will now be eager for the club to push on once more next season and make another attempt for the Premier League title, which has been claimed by Chelsea.
Souness is also of that mindset and while he believes the current Tottenham side is the best he’s ever seen, he has urged the club not to sit on their laurels.
“I’ve said it before, I think this is the best Tottenham team I’ve ever seen,” told Souness on Super Sunday, as quoted by the Sky Sports website.
“I think they’ve got a bit about them in every department. They’ll take you on physically, they are a good football team and they’ve got some very special players.
“Going forward, in theory, they should only get better. What they have to do is not sit on their laurels.
“The board shouldn’t listen to people like us saying what a fabulous team they’ve got, they should be saying ‘we are going to have to go out and strengthen next year’ – because it’s guaranteed Chelsea will, the team that finished above them.
“They’ve got to go out and spend big money again. Prove to the fans they are the real deal and are going to have a right go.
“You don’t sit back and wait for this team to become champions because that might not happen. Some of them might not get any better.
“You’ve got to add to the squad and have a right go because they are that near. They are not very far away.”
Tottenham only brought in four senior players last summer, but they did splash out a huge £67million in order to sign them, including the massive £30million shelled out for flop Moussa Sissoko.
Now, with Souness claiming that Spurs need to spend big, Tottenham fans and Pochettino will just be looking for a more successful summer window.
Of last summer’s signings only Victor Wanyama has played a big part in Spurs’ season with Sissoko and Vincent Janssen both playing well below what was first expected.
In other Tottenham news, Garth Crooks has named this Spurs midfielder in his team of the week.
