Graham Potter: Expert suggests real reason Leicester deal collapsed

Graham Potter likely failed to reach an agreement to become the Leicester City manager due to the financial difficulties surrounding the club.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Leicester may have to be “tight” on their spending this summer after appointing Steve Cooper as their new boss.

Football Insider revealed on 10 June Potter had been in pole position to be named the new manager after holding talks with club officials about the position

But former Nottingham Forest boss Cooper was eventually appointed as Enzo Maresca’s replacement after he joined Chelsea earlier this month.

There are likely to be some challenging weeks ahead at the King Power Stadium after Leicester were charged with a breach of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) in March and face a points deduction next season.

Football Insider revealed on 12 June the club could lose multiple stars this summer as they look to balance the books.

Leicester set for limited spending after Steve Cooper appointment

Borson believes talks between Leicester and Potter likely stalled due to his high demands and the limited budget expected to be on offer this summer.

He told Football Insider: “They are going to have to cut their cloth accordingly.

“I think you’ll find Leicester have to be tight on their spending for next season.

“That is probably why Steve Cooper ultimately ended up taking the job as opposed to Graham Potter.

“By the time Potter had gone into the detail of what he would require, they probably just felt it was all a bit too much.

“But Leicester may have to take a step back before they can take a step forward and do it in a more measured way.

“It will be interesting to see how honest they are with their fans about that.”
