‘Graham Potter to get West Ham sack ultimatum’

Graham Potter has been tipped to get one quarter of next season to improve the situation at West Ham or “he will lose his job”.

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has suggested that the 49-year-old will come under serious threat at the London Stadium, within the first ten games of the new campaign after a dismal start this term.

Last summer, the Hammers found themselves in need of a new manager following the long-debated departure of David Moyes.

But after the appointment of Julen Lopetegui flopped and he was sacked by West Ham in January, it was Potter who then took charge of the club.

However, he too has struggled to turn things around for the club, who sit 17th in the Premier League table with four games to go, albeit they are guaranteed to avoid relegation.

Graham Potter to get quarter of new West Ham season

On Saturday (26 April), Potter’s former club Brighton produced a remarkable late turnaround to beat West Ham 3-2 at the AMEX Stadium, after which he showed his frustrations in a press conference.

That means the Hammers have now failed to win any of their last seven games, and Potter was booed by both sets of fans.

Even before that, West Ham fans had been suggesting that Potter could already be at risk of being sacked by the club.

Now, Jordan has claimed that the 49-year-old will need to show signs of progress by the early stages of next season if he wants to remain at the London Stadium long-term.

After being asked on talkSPORT if he expects Potter to be given patience by West Ham owners David Sullivan and Karren Brady, the ex-Crystal Palace chairman said: “Well I think it was always going to be next season that he had to be judged upon.

“He’s got to change the direction of travel for West Ham for a variety of different reasons. I don’t think the appointment of Lopetegui was a great appointment, I never thought it was at the time.

“This idea that it was suddenly going to be a massive departure from what David Moyes produces [in] football, was just nonsense, helping things get characterised in a certain way and then people get judged by a set of expectations.

“He’s [Potter] come in mid-season, he needs to be doing better, we’ve got to judge him in the first-quarter of next season, and if he doesn’t pick up the slack, do better, then he’ll lose his job…

“But I think he should be given a period of time to be able get under the bonnet, without the game to game scrutiny, and change the direction of travel, and if he can’t do it in the first ten games of next season then I suspect he’ll come under real pressure.”

West Ham will expect improvements soon from their manager

Football Insider Verdict

There have been suggestions that Potter is excited by the upcoming summer transfer window at West Ham, and he surely deserves at least that opportunity.

Having come in midway through the January window, he has had very little time to put his mark on this squad, certainly in terms of personnel.

It makes sense to at least give him the chance to do that this summer, then he can really show where he might be able to take the club, albeit there have been precious few signs so far.

After their success under Moyes though, everyone connected with West Ham knows they have the potential to be in a much better position than they are at the minute.

So if Potter cannot soon start to deliver that, the inevitable nature of football in this era means he will surely soon be moved on as the Hammers look to other potential options.

With that in mind, it undoubtedly feels as though Potter is going to have to work quickly and efficiently in the coming months, if he wants to still be in this job beyond the early stages of the 2025/26 campaign.
