Graham Roberts has defended Dele Alli and stated that the Tottenham star has been a “sensation” for the club.

Midfielder Alli was sent off on Thursday night for a high-footed challenge as Spurs crashed out of the Europa League at the hands of Gent.

The 20-year-old was highly criticised for the tackle on the Gent player who could have suffered a career-threatening injury.

After the match, former Tottenham man Roberts defended Alli and explained the good he has brought to the table since arriving at the club as posted on his personal Twitter account.

“Yes, Dele made a bad error of judgment,” said Roberts. “But this season he has really grown up and had an incredible two years for the club – his goalscoring record for the club is incredible and he has been a sensation.”

Alli moved to White Hart Lane from League One outfit MK Dons during the summer of 2015 and the youngster quickly became an integral part of the club’s Champions League plans.

He was named the PFA’s Young Player of the Year in his debut campaign in the top flight as he helped Spurs secure third place.

Furthermore, those performances saw him win a call-up to the England national squad where he was part of the club’s Euro 2016 party in France.

This season, the England international has continued and gone one step further in his performances as he has been on a magnificent goalscoring run.

Alli has scored 13 goals in 35 games in all competitions this season, 11 of those goals have come in 24 Premier League games.

If he continues this form then he may well hit the 20-goal barrier in the league which is usually expected from strikers.
