‘Great fit…magnificent’ – Exclusive: Pundit in awe as Spurs work on £19m deal in fee & wages
Tottenham would pull off a “magnificent signing” if they beat a horde of other top clubs to the summer capture of Philippe Coutinho.
That is according to ex-Spurs midfielder Michael Brown, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the north Londoners’ pursuit of the Brazilian playmaker.
Barcelona are looking for another club for their £142million signing from Liverpool as they look to free up space in their squad and on their wage bill.
As revealed by Football Insider, it would require a loan fee of around £8million to take him for a season as well as payment of his salary worth in excess of £200,000-a-week.
Brown told Football Insider: “It just depends on what the total is – you can dress the deal up however you want regarding finances – for example, what are the wages?
“There might be an £8million loan fee but half the wages – you can’t be fully sure what that deal might be – but would he be a Spurs-type player? I think we all know the answer to that.
“I think he would be a great fit, great excitement. It just depends on what way Mourinho wants to play.
“Would he want to play for Mourinho in the Spurs setup? I think he would. He’d like a return to the Premier League, the Premier League’s exciting, and it would be a magnificent signing.”
Bayern Munich announced last month they would not be activating their option to make Coutinho’s 2019-20 loan switch permanent.
The attacking midfielder has had mixed returns at Barca – 21 goals and 11 assists from 76 matches – and Bayern, where his 32 games have yielded nine goals and eight assists.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that the club may offer £15m-valued ace in part-exchange for 24-year-old.
