Gregor Kobel: Newcastle must exploit Chelsea depth to win Borussia Dortmund transfer race

Gregor Kobel is attracting Premier League interest with both Newcastle United and Chelsea eyeing up moves for him ahead of the summer transfer window.

The pair of English giants are keen to try and strike a deal for the Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper, who has been one of the Bundesliga’s standout glovemen in recent years.

Newcastle and Chelsea are both tracking the 28-year-old with a view to making a move, according to Foot Mercato, while Bayern Munich also view him as a potential successor to Manuel Neuer.

The Swiss international is set to enter the final two years of his contract at Dortmund in the summer, and it is noted that he could decide to take “a new step” in his career in the coming months.

The addition of a new number one goalkeeper is high on Newcastle’s transfer agenda this summer, and they hold a crucial edge over Chelsea in the race to secure Kobel’s signature.

Newcastle can guarantee number one spot for Gregor Kobel

Newcastle appear increasingly unlikely to trigger the option to buy as part of their loan deal for Aaron Ramsdale, despite the ex-Arsenal stopper becoming their first-choice in recent weeks.

Both he and Nick Pope have had to endure their fair share of struggles this season, and as a result, they are both facing uncertain futures ahead of next season.

The Magpies’ efforts to try and bring in a new ‘keeper have previously seen them identify Lens’ Robin Risser as a candidate to take the number one shirt, while they have also now outlined Kobel as an option.

Eddie Howe and Co. appear set to face a battle with Chelsea to secure his signature this summer, but they hold a crucial edge in that they would be able to undisputably guarantee regular football.

The Blues already have Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen and Gabriel Slonina as part of their first-team squad, while the impressive Mike Penders will bolster that number even further when he returns from his loan with Strasbourg.

Regardless of how the West Londoners lay out their plan to Kobel in the coming months, the level of competition will surely be off-putting for him, and they may not even have Champions League football to aid their cause.

Bayern Munich are also serious competitors, but Newcastle also have an advantage on their side in that instance, if Kobel fancies the challenge of a new league.

Magpies sales could free up cash for Kobel swoop

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider earlier this week that Newcastle have “serious concerns” regarding the futures of several of their key players this summer.

The likes of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes are both being heavily linked with exits at the moment, with the former in particular seeming increasingly likely to move elsewhere with every passing week.

A sale of Tonali would not be a positive thing for the Tynesiders in isolation, but it would at least free up some cash to bring Kobel to the club.

The ex-Stuttgart man will certainly not come cheaply, given that he boasts top-level experience in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League, but money shouldn’t be an issue for Newcastle if they are forced into selling Tonali.
