Brede Hangeland has surprisingly selected Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele in his ‘Lazy XI’.

BBC 5 Live Sport’s official Twitter account uploaded Hangeland’s line-up of his former team-mates who he believes to be the laziest, and his naming of Dembele has caused quite the commotion among football fans.

The Belgian international is known for his tireless work in the centre of the Spurs midfield, which begs the question as to why Hangeland, who played alongside Dembele at Fulham, would pick him in this team.

There was also a spot for former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov in his XI – but that has understandably not caused as big of a debate.

Now, the ex-Norway international made it clear that he was solely naming Spurs star Dembele due to his lack of work in the gym, and not on the pitch.

“He had a dodgy hip too and I think he was just being sensible in not doing the heavy lifting in the gym. He knew if he did it then something will happen,” said Hangeland, as shown on BBC 5 Live Sport’s official Twitter account on Friday.

“But he’s a unit anyway. He’s one of those people who is just born with a great physique.”

He added: “He didn’t go in the gym and that was my criteria for my eleven – he wasn’t lazy all over, it was the gym, I never saw him in the gym.”

Dembele has been one of the key factors in Tottenham’s rise to being a perennial title chaser.

Last season he made 39 appearances across all competitions as he played a vital role in the centre of the pitch, winning back possession while also providing support in attack.
