Harry Kane: Major update on Man United pursuit of Tottenham star – sources

Man United are pessimistic about the prospect of landing Tottenham striker Harry Kane this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 29-year-old is United’s top target as they search for a marquee striker signing – but a move is becoming less likely as the summer window advances.

Man United are thought to want to wrap up their transfer business early on in the window – and negotiations for Kane have now gone quiet.

Kane has just 12 months left on his Tottenham contract and has been widely linked with the Red Devils, Chelsea and Bayern Munich since the conclusion of the 2022-23 campaign.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Man United have already begun sounding out alternatives to the England captain as they believe a deal could be too hard to do.

Erik ten Hag’s side are keen to add a marquee striker this summer in order to ease the goalscoring burden on Marcus Rashford.

Loanee Wout Weghorst was drafted in during the January window following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure but managed just two goals in 31 outings across all competitions.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (9 June) that Man United will not pursue a permanent move for Weghorst, 30, in the upcoming summer window.

The long-term future of Kane is unclear with just one year remaining on his Tottenham contract.

The talismanic striker notched 30 goals and three assists in 38 Premier League games during the 2022-23 campaign – a tally bettered only by Man City’s Erling Haaland.

Man United will return to the Champions League in the 2023-24 campaign after achieving a third-place finish last term.

Ten Hag’s side are yet to make a summer signing.
