Harry Maguire sends ‘unreal’ Man United message after what he spotted in the US

Ruben Amorim’s rebuild at Manchester United is yet to yield wholesale changes in defence as he weighs up the future of Harry Maguire.

Amorim‘s root-and-branch overhaul of his Man United squad this summer has been much slower than fans had expected, with only three first-team additions so far and even fewer departures than necessary.

Matheus Cunha has been joined in the arrivals lounge by Diego Leon and Bryan Mbeumo this month as United’s spending climbs above £130million, with further signings expected before the window ends.

Man United have found it even more difficult to move on the players Amorim has deemed out of favour at Old Trafford this summer, with only Marcus Rashford’s season loan to Barcelona being sealed so far.

Maguire credits ‘unreal’ Man United support amid exit rumours

Amorim told Rashford and four other exit-linked players that they were surplus to requirements at the start of pre-season, but Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia are yet to find new clubs this summer.

Alejandro Garnacho’s departure is also expected to drag on until the end of the window, but the likes of Maguire are also under no illusions that his place will be under threat next term as the rebuild continues.

Maguire was late in jetting out to Man United’s tour of the US due to a personal matter, but joined up just in time to feature in their 2-1 win over West Ham in the Premier League Summer Series on 26 July.

On Instagram (28 July), Maguire reposted Man United’s video of him applauding the crowd at the MetLife Stadium as he warmed up, with the caption of: “Unreal support out in New Jersey”.

Maguire ‘safe for now’ at Man United as transfer links dry up

Football Insider Verdict

Maguire was tipped to be sold this summer as part of Amorim’s rebuild, but the Red Devils’ former scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in May that Man United will instead offer the defender a new contract.

Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof’s departures on free transfers this summer have opened the door for central defensive reinforcements at Old Trafford, but it’s unlikely any new arrivals will displace Maguire.

Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Ayden Heaven could prove to be Amorim’s prefered trio at the back going into next season, but with Luke Shaw far more likely to be moved on this summer, Maguire’s place is safe for the next 12 months at least.
