Harry Maguire set for ‘sit-down talks’ after ‘Man United contract twist’

Harry Maguire is expected to hold sit-down talks with Man United boss Ruben Amorim about the club’s plans for his future, according to the club’s former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during their most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that the 31-year-old will seek assurances about his position.

This comes after United triggered the option to extend the defender’s contract by one year, as it was previously set to expire in the summer of 2025.

Activating the clause has ensured United will not risk losing Maguire for free at the end of the season, but is not seen as a guarantee about his long-term future in the side.

Brown explained that his departure remains on the cards in the summer regardless of the extension if he is not given assurances about his place in the squad.

However, his role in the squad in recent weeks, including starting crucial fixtures against Man City and Liverpool, have shown he remains a valuable asset to the squad.

Brown previously told Football Insider that Maguire has impressed Amorim since his arrival at Old Trafford, which played a part in extending his deal.

Maguire has attracted interest from clubs in Italy including Napoli, who signed Scott McTominay in the summer, amid rumours of a potential exit.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience working closely with players and managers at the top level including the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, insisted that the centre-back can still play a key role under Amorim at Old Trafford.

They’ve sorted out Maguire’s contract situation,” he told Football Insider.

“But I think he’ll sit down and speak to Amorim about where he fits into his plans long-term.

“He looks to have established himself as a part of that first-choice back three next to Martinez and De Ligt, and he’s performed well in recent weeks.

“He defended well against Liverpool, he won his headers and made a couple of impressive blocks.

“But his future will depend on whether he’s going to be a regular feature in the team beyond just the end of this season.

“Amorim has to make a decision about where he fits in with his plans.

“Just because he’s not going to leave for free in the summer doesn’t mean he’s definitely staying, so for me his future is still a bit up in the air.
