Harvey Barnes: Newcastle could accept ‘big’ offer as replacement lined up
Harvey Barnes could be allowed to leave Newcastle United this summer despite the decision to let Anthony Gordon join Barcelona.
The 28-year-old enjoyed a strong end to the season after replacing Gordon in Eddie Howe’s starting XI and has been expected to fill his boots ahead of next season.
However, he has attracted interest from a number of clubs both in the Premier League and in Europe, and there is a feeling he could be allowed to leave for the right price.
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle could use the money from Barnes and Gordon to invest in a “top-class” winger.
After what proved to be a frustrating season at St James’ Park, the Magpies are aiming to bolster their squad in what should be a busy transfer window for Newcastle.

Brown told Football Insider last month that Newcastle are planning to keep Barnes after cashing in on Gordon rather than moving to sign a replacement.
However, there is a growing feeling he could be sold for the right price if any of the clubs tracking him choose to step up their interest this summer.

Howe’s side are aiming to improve in multiple key positions this summer, and high-value player sales could see them refresh their squad with new options brought in.
“Harvey Barnes could go either way at Newcastle,” Brown told Football Insider.
“He came into the team when Gordon dropped out near the end of the season and did a very good job replacaing him.
“For Newcastle, that could suggest they don’t have to go and spend money on a reaplcement, but it also could mean clubs are willing to pay more for him.
“There is a lot of interest in Barnes, I know a lot of clubs have looked at him over the years and have been impressed by what they’ve seen.
“Having showed he can step up for Newcastle, they might be ready to make a move, and I think a big offer could tempt Newcastle to sell.
“On top of the money they’ve got for Gordon, they could use it to reinvest in the squad, bring in a top-class winger and strengthen other positions too.
“It’s going to be a difficult window for Newcastle, but if they can make money through selling players, it might give them the opportunity to invest.”
Which wingers are on Newcastle’s radar?
Following Gordon’s exit, the Magpies have been linked with a number of potential replacements and are considering their options ahead of the window opening.
The £69million already received for his sale, plus whatever Barnes’ potential exit would bring in, will allow them to set their sights on lofty targets.

Football Insider reported on 30 May that Gabriel Martinelli could be a target for Newcastle if he is allowed to leave Arsenal in the near future.
The winger has been in and out of the starting XI under Mikel Arteta this season, with the Gunners now believed to be prioritising big sales to raise funds.
Martinelli’s contract at the Emirates is set to expire in 2027, and unless a new deal is agreed, he could be available, placing Newcastle and other potential suitors on alert.
