'Surprised me' - Rangers senior figure blown away by red-hot Ibrox sensation

Rangers coach Jonatan Johansson has admitted he has been surprised by Alfredo Morelos’ performances for the Ibrox giants after his summer move from Finnish champions HJK Helsinki.

Johansson recommended the Colombian to then Gers boss Pedro Caixinha, who launched a £1million swoop to bring the striker to Ibrox.

Morelos has been in red-hot form for the club, netting 17 times for the Gers and establishing himself as a huge success for the Light Blues, while he attracted a number of bids from Chinese Super League side Beijing Renhe through January and February.

Johansson admits he thought Morelos’ “good points” would suit a move to Scotland but revealed his surprise at how “great” the 21-year-old has been for the Gers, becoming something of a sensation this season.

“This time last year I was with Finland and saw a lot of Alfredo,’ Johansson said, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“I had seen him play loads of times before I even came to Rangers. It was easy to see how he is as a personality and what he brought to the HJK team, so I brought it to Pedro.

“When I came in we spoke about transfer targets and it took off from there. I had seen a lot of HJK, knew a lot of people at that club and so it was easy for me to speak to them.’

“He has surprised me a little bit. Watching him in Finland, I felt his good points would suit the Scottish game because he is strong, likes to battle with defenders – plus he scores goals. You never know with transfers how they will turn out but Alfredo has been great.”

With 17 goals in 36 appearances for the Gers – added to 46 goals in 62 for HJK – the Colombian has emerged as a surprise contender for a place in his country’s squad at this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Morelos recently signed an extension to his Gers deal to keep him with the Light Blues until the summer of 2021.

Football Insider verdict:

Morelos has been a fantastic signing for the Ibrox giants and has been – alongside Daniel Candeias – the big success story of Pedro Caixinha’s brief reign in charge. Despite a couple of high profile misses, Morelos is a brilliant penalty box striker and has shown a fantastic eye for goal. Johansson apparently also had a hand in bringing jet-heeled winger Serge Atakayi to the club shortly before Morelos and clearly has a good eye for talented players. With the sums being spoke about to sign Morelos less than 12 months after joining the Gers, there can be little doubt the striker has been a huge success.
