'He needs to play' - Exclusive: Kevin Phillips delivers verdict on young Wolves talent

Kevin Phillips has claimed Morgan Gibbs-White should have gone out on loan in January after watching the midfielder for Wolves in the Europa League.

The former Sunderland and West Brom striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, admitted the 20-year-old “has got some real quality but insisted he “needs to play week-in, week-out.”

Gibbs-White started for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side as they lost 3-2 at Espanyol on Thursday night.

The midfielder who has represented England at every youth level from under-16 to under-21 received criticism from some fans for his display.

The result was, however, enough to see the Premier League side qualify for the last 16 of the Europa League thanks to a 4-0 victory in the first leg of the tie.

When asked for his assessment of the youngster’s performance on the road, Phillips told Football Insider: “He has hardly played any football. For his future, his progression, he might have been a player that was better off going out on loan somewhere in January. Just go and play football week-in, week-out.

“I would not judge a player who has hardly kicked a ball this season to get chucked into a European tie away from home. They were very comfortable with the lead they took over there. It is difficult to be critical of a young kid being put into a situation like that.

“He has got some quality but he needs to play.”

The academy graduate has made 13 appearances for the Wanderers this season, featuring predominantly as a substitute.

The draw for the next round was made on Friday with the Midlands club set to face the conquerers of Arsenal – Olympiacos in the next round.

In other Wolves news, Paul Robinson has told Football Insider rival winger would be a welcome addition at Molineux.
