Noel Whelan hailed Tyrone Mings as the “Championship Virgil van Dijk” after helping transform Aston Villa into promotion contenders.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United striker has been struck by the impact the centre-back has made since he joined Villa in January on loan from Bournemouth.
Mings has made 15 appearances for the Midlands giants and been a key player in their remarkable run that catapulted them into the end-of-season play-offs.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Whelan explained why he has been so impressed by the 26-year-old.
“He is brilliant, I would love to have him in my team.” Whelan said. “He has everything you want in a defender – physical, aggressive, great build, dominant in the air, quick good feet, dominant in both penalty boxes.
“He is like a Championship Virgil van Dijk. He has changed Villa’s defensive line-up and been a great signing.
“When you are up against a defender like that, it is a hard 90 minutes. He wants to bully you in a good way, and you end up dropping a bit deep, or going wide, because you know you can’t get past him.”
Van Dijk was named the PFA player of the year on Sunday for his outstanding campaign for Premier League and Champions League contenders Liverpool.
Ming is on loan at Villa until the end of the season, when he is due to return to parent club Bournemouth.
In other Aston Villa news, it can be the REVEALED that the club are readying a £30million move for a Villa player after jetting in for a transfer mission.
