Former Rangers captain Terry Butcher has claimed having Steven Gerrard as manager will convince players to come to Ibrox this summer – if the Gers board back him with money.
Gerrard will take the reins at Ibrox on June 1st and is expected to spark a massive overhaul of the Gers squad following another disappointing season for the Light Blues.
Butcher also thinks that players who might not have been sure about signing for other managers will now go to Ibrox because Gerrard is in the hotseat.
“You’re going to go to Scotland because it is Steven Gerrard that is the manager rather than someone else who think ‘hmm I’m not too sure.'” Butcher said, as quoted by Sky Sports.
“He will get players to Rangers. If he has got the money.”
Football Insider verdict
Having Gerrard as manager will hopefully prove a draw to players as the Gers look to stop Celtic winning an eighth successive Scottish title. The Liverpool icon has a huge reputation in the game and can provide a massive platform for players to come to Scotland and impress. The 114-times capped former England star also has an extensive contact book and could see a number of his former team-mates want to come to Ibrox and help him make a success of his first job in management and win trophies and titles. Butcher knows first-hand the effect a big name as manager can have after joining the Light Blues as part of Graeme Souness’ Ibrox revolution in the late eighties alongside a host of top players from across Britain and beyond. When that happened it turned the Scottish game on its head and Gers fans will be hoping Gerrard’s appointment can have a similar effect.
