'Heartwarming' - Whelan elated by what Raphinha did after Leeds defeat to Everton

Noel Whelan admitted he was delighted to see Raphinha visibly disappointed after Leeds United suffered defeat to Everton on Wednesday night.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted too many players were able to shrug off a loss too easily and admitted it was refreshing to see a player prove he cares.

The 24-year-old netted his fourth goal of the season against the Toffees but was unable to prevent the Whites from slipping to a 2-1 defeat at home.

Whelan, who was in attendance at Elland Road as part of his broadcasting duties, revealed he was delighted with what he had seen from the winger after the game and suggested other players could learn something from the summer signing.

Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “His disappointment after the game was was really pleasing to me.

“He sat down on the bench and for so many years I can remember, back in the day, when things weren’t going great for Leeds, there were too many players smiling and accepting a defeat – he didn’t.

“He sat there and you can see the disappointment on his face. It shows that he cares about his performance and the results and that’s really heartwarming to see from a player like that.

“He’s playing out of his socks right now and doing everything that’s required of him and even though it’s a defeat for us and the loss of three points, that was really pleasing for me and for the people around to see that.”

Defeat to the Toffees means Leeds head into the weekend’s fixtures sitting 11th in the table, ahead of both Southampton and Crystal Palace on goal difference alone.
