Former Celtic striker Frank McGarvey has claimed that Leigh Griffiths is the best striker at the club and that he should start Sunday’s potential title party against Rangers.
McGarvey believes that the 27-year-old is more consistent than fellow hitman Moussa Dembele, and that he should start the Old Firm clash as he will be ‘sharper’ than the Frenchman.
“I would pick Griffiths for this game every time. For me, he’s Celtic’s best striker,” McGarvey said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“Griffiths is just coming back from injury and didn’t do much against Hibs, but he’ll be sharper for the hour.
“If he gets a start against Rangers, there is no way he would let Celtic down.”
Griffiths was largely ineffectual against Hibernian in the Bhoys’ 2-1 loss to Hibernian, as was replaced by Odsonne Edouard on the hour mark.
Dembele missed the trip to Easter Road with a slight injury and his injury status is as yet unknown ahead of the potential title decider Old Firm derby.
Football Insider verdict
McGarvey is just plain wrong here, Griffiths is a good, and at times very good striker, but there is no way that he is the best striker at the club, Dembele is. Dembele has a far better all-round game than Griffiths, and also has a recent better scoring record as well. If there is one player that Brendan Rodgers would like to be able to pick for Sunday’s game then it’s Dembele, who caused Rangers all sorts of problems in the most recent games between the teams, particularly in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden where he dominated the Ibrox club. Whilst Griffiths is certainly a good player, he is not on the level of Dembele.
